St Georgius sword with scabbard - for sale.

Sword description:
This sword was designed by me, according to historical sources from years 1370-1400, mostly German.
the sword is one handed weapon, fully functional. The sword can be used with both hands also - just
like we can see on manuscripts, with second hand on the pommel. The sword is not light but well
balanced and very powerfull for cutting. The blade is stiff for strong thrusting also.
It is something between Types XII - XIV and maybe also XVI. The form is based on museum swords,
mostly German, and many manuscripts sources.

Scabbard description:
Scabbrd style I called Type "S" is well known method which we can see in the sources from 11th to
the end of 14th century - very common and practical style of scabbard and belt. The scabbard core
is made with wood, linen cover and calfskin. Leather was colored and antiqued.
It is importand thing that all decorations here are hand carved - even the stamps were first hand carverd in wood.
The colors are also hand painted - just like in medieval art.
But decorated scabbards were not very common - mostly they were using simple, ordinary scabbards - but
we know that some unique weapons had exceptional sheath, mostly highly decorated.
This is one of those - and that was the intention...
St Georgius is the person well known and famous in Middle Ages - we can see him on the shields,
paintings, weapons - as a patron and protector of the knights.
Actually this particular type of belt dissapear at the and of 14thC. but I have decided to use it -
for the contrast and to note that this is battle weapon - not ceremonial :)

Inspirations:
- illustrations from Belgium, France and German manuscripts, end of 14thC.
- St Georges and the Dragon sculpture in alabaster, c.1400, artist unknown > St George details
- Sforza Triptich by Van Der Veyden, c. 1400 > the dragon "anatomy" is from this painting :)
- the case / sheath of St Maurice sword from Turin, c. 1430 was inspiration for the main
composition and color style. actually many times unique swords were received special sheath some
later time - like St Maurice and some royal swords.

Inscription:
On the scabbard and the sword fullers we can see inscription - fragment of Psalm 50.
We can find also on other swords fragments of Psalms or invocations.
This text in latin is:
"Cor mundum crea in me, Deus:
et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis." ...
which means:
"Create, O God, in me a clean heart
and renew in my chest invincible spirit!"...

This is simply one of the most appealing work I've seen in years.

The leather work on the scabbard is nothing short of amazing, and the sword is equally beautiful...and the all project is well researched to boot.

To me this is as good as it gets.

... also let me say some more about the sword:
- main source was famous sword from Metmuseum, dated to c.1400.
original sword is heavy, strong sword and someone says it is not war sword - I am not agree. it is indeed decorated sword (even with early etching method) and engravings - but it is type XIV with very simple battle blade form. That was the blade and sword proportions which inspired me to design my sword. (I have made before quite accurate replica of this sword).
Sword from Metmuseum is 1673 g heavy - which is even more than St Georgius. here is description http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-colle...arch/23367
The crossguard and pommel in my sword are different - it is irather in central Europe style which was common in 14th c. and still "in use" to the end of this century... The idea was to create sword with the story - special sword. It could be create even before 1350 - but deserved a more dignified scabbard after decades (for example due to participate in some special event or battle...) So, that was the story in my mind when I was started design it...
There is also another sword similar to Metmuseum one - it is from Musee de l`Armee in Paris, which has similar parameters... and some others in England too.
So, I`m very glad that you like my work - hope you will find also some usefull informations here :)

and about the price for this sword - feel free to make some offer - the price is my proposition - sword is still to take :)

One question: why no chape on the scabbard?

Patrick - well, I think there is a few reasons - there was no rule about this element - no rule that it must be on every scabbard. many swords didn`t have chape - we can see that on manuscripts also. some reenactors use sometimes a leather chape and it works. well, it was the part which could be easly lost or damaged...
also, this sword have decorated scabbard and I have decided simply to not give him the chape.
I was thinking about this and IMO there is no need here for this :)
but I can make the chape and put it on - this is no problem.
