Del Tin 5171 Cup Hilt Rapier?
Anyone have/handled one of this things? How does it feel? The Destreza bug's been burrowing under my skin lately, and while I've "settled" on a swept hilt for quite some time now (how does one only "settle" for a beautiful swept hilt?), I've been thinking about adding a cup hilt. And $410 for a rapier for me these days seems incredible.

I of course have to get some money together for my next A&A piece first, but after that...
I haven't handled the cup-hilt, but the Del Tin rapiers are pretty good value for money in general. I don't know whether this option is available for North American customers, but DT also makes practice blades for his rapiers. They are a couple inches longer and not as tapering, making them a little slower compared to the standard-bladed rapiers, but also safer to use.

Really? I didn't realize, but it makes sense, considering Del Tin makes practice blades for Darkwood Armory. You don't happen to know if that affects the cost, do you Björn?
Dave Wilson , a Staff member on SFI , owns one of these DT cup hilts ..... he'd be a good man to ask !

Yeah, Dave replied to my thread on SFI.

But that cup hilt doesn't look like the one on Albion's site... did Del Tin update it? I prefer the original steel wire wrap, myself.

The design has been updated. The pic below is the old version. I prefer the new one.

I like the new hilt overall, but as a personal thing, I really prefer the older steel wire wrap. Any ideas what the new wire wrap is made of? Doesn't look like brass... looks almost like bronze or maybe copper, but it's hard to tell if the color is off based on the photo.
Have you seen CASI's new chiseled cup hilt and matching main gauche? MSRP for the rapier is $315. MSRP for the MG is $240. I bet you'll be able to get the pair for around $500 when they hit the street. Check them out here:

Yeah, I've seen them, even got to handle the rapier. They aren't bad, but the blade's too short for me.

Yep, I responded over there... looks like I'm the only one with one of 'em....

I have the older one. But I must say I like the looks of the newer version, it's even more attractive now.... I wonder if there have been any other changes, such as weight, PoB, blade/OA length, etc....

Like I said, it's pretty good... for a rapier... ;)

Most likely twisted steel wire. The pic is shot outdoors, and the lighting might have influenced the tone. From what I've seen, Fulvio has never used copper or brass wire.
The new version seems more finished to me. I like it better.

I hope you're right, because I overall really like the new look of the rapier much more than the old. I especially like the folded over section on the lip of the cup, a subtle but effective form of protection to keep a rapier from sliding into the hand. If the wire is steel, then I'll be a happy little diestro.
