Looking at the attachment one can see these German hunters carrying messers to complete any unmaking of game. My question is given the size of the messers is anyone of the opinion that the scabbards for such long knives be made with wooden cores not unlike a sword scabbard. For safety reasons it would seem very practical. Just wonder what everyone thinks.

The ones I have seen are generally wood cored for the larger and more complicated sets and leather for the smaller sets.
This looks to me like a principle knife and two or three smaller ones and so I would say this could be either.
