Here are a couple Anglo-Saxon bosses I just finished. Both are based on schematics published in Archaeologia: Volume 110, Early Anglo-Saxon Shields - by Tania Dickinson and Heinrich Härke.
From the solid knob, this one tapers from 5 or 6mm down to 1.5mm or less at the edge of the flange. I was able to true up the plane of the flange just by hammering on the apex - a solid boss! Oil blackened with polished rivet/nail caps for contrast

This one is 16cm tall, though some of the same type stretch to 20cm! 2.5-3mm throughout, tapering down at the flange. The flange is only wide enough to accommodate a set of small rivet/nails.

More in this vein coming soon!

For such apparently simple objects they are fantastic, both in execution and in aesthetics.
Simple but fantastic - well done.

Oooo, I do so like that first one! It looks very much like some Finnish archeological finds.
Have to ask: Are these already spoken for ?
Great job!

Thanks, Tod and JT.
I took these photos of similar finds from the National Museum of Finland when I was in Helsinki, JT; I imagine you are pretty familiar with them:

One of sugar-loaf form:

And a bronze one with accompanying grip - evidently a popular design for a long time:

The ones I posted are already spoken for, but I would be happy to make more. :-)

Hah, would you look at that! And such great photos too! I have to admit that these knobbed, waisted shield bosses are my favorite, later types are rather boring compared to these. I have always thought that that pointy bronze one is just simply wicked!
I had my old shield destroyed in an experiment, should make a new one perhaps. Would be the perfect excuse for ordering such a boss, eh?
Now you set me thinking...

Great job Jeffrey. There aren't many people able to make a good job of these.
