The Spear of Charlemagne,
Some time back i caught the majority of a programe about this on the discovery channel,
A whole host of names throughout history connected to this spear for one reason or another,
The programe discussing this spear, went as far as x-ray and carbon dating,
One central piece dated out to the time of Jesus and they said/discussed that a small central part could be one of the nails used in the crucifiction,
Have any of you people seen any pictures or good sites about this on your net travels,
Any makers out there ever made one as a commision,
Anyone have any different opinions to the programme shown if you guys have seen it,

The episode you refer to was titled "Spear of Jesus", details of which can be found here:
http://times.discovery.com/schedule/episode.j...&gid=0

The spear under scrutiny is variously refered to as the "Spear of Destiny", the "Holy Lance", and the "Spear of Longinus". A substantial mythos has evolved around the spear - too much to cover fully here - and legend holds that whoever is in possession of the spear cannot be killed, defeated in combat, is made able to rule the world, etc. Charlemagne suppossedly carried the spear successfully through many victorious battles before dropping it while fording a river and dying thereafter (or was that Frederick Barbarossa?), while Hitler also died not long after the spear was recovered by the Allies. Coincidence... or Psychic phenomenon...? ;)

As a holy relic, it is purportedly (along with at least a couple of other spears) the blade that the Centurion Longinus used to pierce the side of Christ at the crucifixion. The nail/spike tied into the blade's centre is of course claimed to be one of the nails from the true cross.

If you're interested in an entertaining read on the subject I recommend the book "Spear of Destiny" by Trevor Ravenscroft.

A Photo with description of the spear from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is here:
