Can you shed any light? Family tradition was that it was a Civil War sword carried by a relative "Edwin Hall", but I've found some evidence and it has been suggested by another family member it belonged to "Isaac Hall" from the American Revolution.

Well, if it was carried by Edwin Hall during the Civil war, he was using an antique.

It looks like an American horseman's saber, dating from the Revolution. If you can find a copy of George Neumann's, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, you will find swords very much like yours on pages 166-168. It's a very good book, but hard to find these days.

Thank you Roger! Isaac was promoted from Lt. to Cpt in October 1776 and was in the 1st Regiment Light Horse Militia from Connecticut. It would appear that it is indeed a horseman's saber.

Thanks guys. Any idea as to value for insurance purposes? We've kept it on the wall at a family mountain cabin for years, I just finished renovating the cabin and want to put it back up on the wall.

By the way, we found paperwork documenting it as belonging to Isaac's son Abner who was sworn in in 1778 in the 1st. Lt. Horse Regiment. I'm not sure if it even belonged to Issac but it belonged to his son for sure, Abner was a messenger/waiter for Isaac starting in 1776 and then a horseman when he was old enough in 1778. It doesn't look very ornate, so I was thinking it's an enlisted man's sword vs. and officer's sword. Likely?
