Hello,

I am wanting to make a full reproduction of the Ballinderry sword . Likely, this coming winter. It is a sword that I have wanted to make for some time now. I am wondering if anyone has images or measurements that they would be willing to share with me. :) I have the SVA book.

The sword will be up for sale upon completion, but at this point I don't want to quote a price until it is finished. I will likely offer the sword at the point where all of the metal work is finished but before the final handle is added so any interested client may have the sword finished as they like.

Thanks guys! I'm not sure if it has been covered before but does anyone know what the inscription on the hilt means?

Peirce thinks it is the name of the hilt maker. It is a logical conclusion since there are other very similar type K hilts with the same inscription. (Pics from the same article.)

Oh of course I see that in the book now. Does this leave any indication where the hilt may have been manufactured? Ian Pierces book seems to indicate two of them being found in Ireland.

The general belief is that type K represent a Carolingian style. So probably in the Rhine area.

Does that correspond etymologically though? Hiltipreht certainly seems Germanic to me.

Might it be that it isn't a personal name but a company name? Hilti-preht, Hilt (like a sword hilt) + Preht (similar to several words with a meaning "bright"), so basically, the "Bright Hilt" company?

I'm sure you'll do an outstanding job on this Jeff. I just wish I had the funds to make a bid. Still, very much looking forward to seeing this one come together.

A few years ago, I came across the Deepeeka model for $50.00 and picked it up. Horrible blade, of course, but, I liked the hilt furniture a great deal. The other day I pulled it off the wall and decided to re-grip it and scabbard it up.

Here's the re-grip so far.

Not quite done yet, but, it's re-cored and wrapped. I'll be adding some brass wire in between the center, wide riser and the risers to each side of it.
