I have only one helmet at the moment... A conical from Windrose. I just finished flaring the back of the helmet to give me some more clearance when I look up.

My new helmets from the 1500-1530 period, made by the talented Stanislav Prosek.




First a Landsknecht skull cap which is based on one drawn by Paul Dolnstein in 1502-1504 as well as similar helmets seen in the images made by Hans Burgkmair for Emperor Maximilians "Weiss Kunig" around 1514-1516



Second is a early Burgonet inspired by one in the collection of the Dutch Army Museum (Nederlands Legermuseum) with missing parts "filled in" using two burgonets in a similar style dated to the same years (1510-1530) which are preserved in Italian collections.

I'm jealous, Daniel! I'd love to have a cap and early burgonet in my collection!

Here's my current collection in their display cases. The blued isenhut is my wife's helm, but I've got a similar polished version for myself as well. I've just acquired the armet and it's a fantastic piece of art and functions very well.

Just took this outstanding Tomala cabasset in trade (photo from the site of armourer Tomasz Samula). Perfect historical lining, laminated cheeks, etc. Too small for me, alas, but a fantastic piece.

I commissioned Master Peter (North Star Armoury) to make this helm we jointly designed. It's heat treated spring steel and there's not a square centimeter he hasn't hand shaped - all the curves are all compound/complex.

We based the design on several interesting primary sources, and the back flare curves can be seen in pieces like this ~1320 door carving in the Bargello Palace in Florence.

I use this helm extensively in SCA combat, and its sugarloaf/olgive shape deflects blows like teflon.

Here is my turn-of-the-16th Mamluk Chichak. The last days of their Empire. It's a practice helmet, made extra heavy and tough for HMB sparring. 3mm mild steel, visor is 2mm. It weighs somewhere between 6kg and 7kg. For actual competitions I will use a lighter one (which I don't have yet... :) ), but stay with a Chichak, my all-time favourite style.

I had a Historical-style bar nasal made for authenticity (and practicing alone) when needed, but a covered face is wise for HMB fighting, so the visor/faceplate was made with this is mind. Mamluk Chichaks historically didn't have faceplates. I am considering a hidden bar-grille with a maille aventail over it for the competition version.

It was made by the highly skilled Edward Shayhutdinov from Kazan in Tatarstan.
