this is a T4 bacteriophage (bacterial virus) which is specific for the intestinal bacteria E.coli. It predates medieval knights by......say few million years, but it makes for a catchy title though :lol:

for resistance against this phage, E.coli does not rely on cutting, chopping, or poking the virus, but rather develops mutations (changes) which prevent the phage from binding to the bacteria and injecting its DNA into it.

the structure of the phage's head is highly symmetrical and organized (picture attached). It protects/stores the phage's DNA while waiting got the next bacterium to come by. You can see how the "rings" interact with each other, hence the analogy to mail.
