An important discovery - not ornate but very interesting, nevertheless.

Very exciting! Thanks for posting this. Where do you find out about recent finds?
It is a bit difficult to imagine what the helmet looked like in its original form from the roughly assembled mass of corroded fragments, so the sketch helps.

Thanks for sharing this Paul. Seems to be a fairly simple yet sturdy design.
I only found out because someone posted it on another forum and assumed we all knew about it. We didn't!
According to Matt Bunker it was originally thought to be a cooking vessel! That is probably why it has taken so long to emerge.

Wow that's stunning. The reconstruction drawing makes it look to be of a spangenhelm type. If so this would make it the first spangen found in Britain right?

Has a "lay-name" been assigned to this helm yet? (i.e, Coppergate helm, Valsgarde VI, etc)
Edit: Just noticed it was found near Shorwell...so Shorwell helm?

So this is the 5th full Anglo-Saxon helmet right. Sutton Hoo, Benty Grange, Pioneer and Coppergate/York? It is really very different from the others. Some neat variety.
Thanks for posting that. You going to make one Paul?
