Is this basket hilt sword an original or reproduction?

Acquired this sword in 2001 on streets of France. I have not been able to obtain any information on it. I would like to know if it is an original and origin of country. If you have any additional info that would also be helpful. The only marking I can find is a head stamped on blade. The blade is very pitted.
