Hello people! I'm thinking of replacing a type H hilt I have on my Hanwei Tinker Viking blade with a hilt of a more transitional viking/early middleages type and I think type Y (Geibig 13 v.1, Oakeshott type C) might be a good choice as it evolves into 13th century German cocked hat type D pommels, but I have seen very few of those earlier examples that still belong to the "viking age". I would appreciate if you would post some pictures from museums or publications (of course not those protected by copyright), or even pictures of good replicas based on real examples. I will start with the picture from Geibig typology posted on this forum by Kirk Spencer.

Thanks guys, these are exactly what I wanted to see. I think such a hilt would suit well to a nicely tapered H/T blade.
Btw, these all look like one piece pommels, is that right?

The type Y pommels all are one pice, but with a "fake" division line.
This line is basically what spearates them from the medevial versions of the same shape.
There are a several of these on Vikveris database of museum photos;
Photos from trodheim, including a couple of type Ys

Thanks Elling. Is there a way to save vikverir photos? I can save them only in small, thumbnail versions...
Sure.
You right click the thumbnails, choose "open in new window" and save. ;)

I thought I tried that but obviously didn't. Thanks. :D
