Hi, can anyone tell me what these leather ties(highlighted in green) are used for? The German word for them is befestigungsriemen and the translation is 'attachment belt', but what does it attach to or attaches to it?

The only shields they've appeared on seem to be funerary pieces, so they were probably made for the practical application of setting the shields up on hangers above knight's tombs, if I had to venture a guess. The practicality of their use in combat scenarios is beyond me.

Thanks Gregory, I thought they may have been to attach the shield to part of the horses saddle during long rides or something like that. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
