So, I am quite fascinated by this sword, and I would like to know if anyone knows more about it, like dimensions, blade type, dating...
Find Place: Satakunta Eura Pappilanmäki Finland. From Suomen kansallismuse, Helsinki Finland. Picture by Kirk Lee Spencer, I found it here on the forum.
I always liked that one: It must have looked epic when it was new.
Thanks Gregory! So, basically all we have is picture of the hilt and quite uncertain dating, period of northern crusades, so that means 12th or 13th century, maybe around 1200... Has anybody seen what the rest of the blade looks like?
The axe head and spear head were also silver-inlayed. Those are rare archaeological finds, I must say. The spear head's silver inlay is faintly visible.
I have seen this sword live, but that was years ago. IIRC the blade is something like Oakeshott X or even XIII and in relation to the hilt I think a bit short. I can't remember if you could tell if the blade is still in it's original dimensions. I hope someone has more accurate memories...
I noticed a similar sword from a fairly recent auction at Hermann Historica. Same type of hilt, but without the silver inlay.
