Hi,
I am having a scottish single handed sword made. Just like this one;

The smith wants to know if there are any marks or ricasso lines etc on the blade I can't see any in the Wallace book but thought I would ask here. Also dose anyone have any ideas or suggestions for handle material?

Hi Neal, I don't think that you'll find any ricasso lines on this type of sword, most of them seem to be Oakeshott type XII or XIIa. As for marks on the blade, I'm not sure about this particular one but I know there are marks on some of these swords. At least one of these that I know of has a small mark inlaid in brass, or lattin, inside the fuller. As for handle material, I would think you'r options are pretty much limitless here. If I could make a suggestion, I'd say horn. It would be unique and there is at least one reference to highlanders in the late 16th century with horn hilted swords.

I'm going to go for a wood and leather grip.I would have thought than horn would be a wee bit too slick though I have seen in in scottish swords. So far it seems that this particular blade is quite plain.
