Anglo Saxon Shield
Good Evening,
After reading Anglo Saxon Shields and Early Anglo Saxon Shields, I have convinced myself that I want to have one build later this fall. I have run across this website “SaxonShield.tripod.com” Has anyone had any work done there? I like the fact that he does leather edging. Copper would look good also. I will probably have to supply my own boss as I want one from a forge overseas. Does anyone have any other makers that they would recommend? Does anyone know someone that makes brass shield mounts (decorations)?

Thanks
Robert
Basically, these are "just" plywood shields.

Making a plywood shield is quite simple, although it does cost a few evenings of your time.

Personally, I'd rather make one myself than spend the money.

Also, what do you want the shield for? Training / reenactment or collecting / display?
my shield made recently is technically more a viking sheild,

id agree that making your wown shield is the bestidea, that said, be clear what your doing. and always try and be mindful of what the sheilds were like historically, as well as your needs.

for example, most viking sheilds averages between 6-9mm thick. often wih a covering of leather mines at round 9mm, with an iron boss, weighs roughly 4.5kg though mines covered in tough canvas, 2 layers, plus wraparounds of the single rear layer so the edges are 3 layers of canvas thick, glued so that it 'fuses' with the wood in a sense. but its quite heavy..
Hi Paul.

Mostly I just want one for display, so realism is most important. But I guess if both sides are covered, then plywood would work.

If it's not for contact use, I'd go for one that is as authentic as possible.

Unfortunately, I think that means you either have to do it yourself, or spend a ton of money.
