Finally, after years of storing my swords in a corner of the room, I've managed to build a sword display that fits my current needs...
It's a simple steel frame covered with a simili-leather canvas. The frame is made from perforated bars and the strings that hold the weapons go through the canvas and tie into the perforations. The display is held against the wall by the chest of drawers in front of it, the bottom bar is actually larger than the visible width of the display which makes the whole thing quite stable.
It's a good design for me because it makes it possible to try different dispositions, it can adapt to various kinds and sizes of swords and weapons, it leaves the weapons relatively easy to access and take down, and all that without any holes drilled in the wall behind (a big factor for me since I only rent the place).
It's not completely child-safe of course, but right now this is not a primary concern for me. Being behind furniture and relatively high, I think it would be quite difficult to access for small children anyway, but I wouldn't leave unprotected blades like that if I had unsupervised children around...
The swords that can be seen there are, from top to bottom:
- Arms & Armor Montante trainer
- Darkwood rapier
- Albion Next Generation Squire
- Arms & Armor Milanese rapier and dagger
- Angus Trim type XI
