The padded lining on the aventail in this recent thread got me thinking. I know that there wont be surviving examples of the helmets of this time, but are there any from later periods e.g. on camails of 14th or 15th basinets? If not (I think it unlikely) is there any other evidence of this?
I don't know about padding under mail aventails and ventails, but some effigies of the 14th century show padded aventails alone. Logic indicates, at least to me, that padding under mail aventails was, if not common practice, at least preferable. That is just a personal opinion.
There are also effigies that show padding under maille aventails. I know there are several examples, but I only remember this (not really best) one:
Philip II the Bold (1342 - 1404)
Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, Burgundy. Unfortunately, tomb was heavily damaged in French revolution, and was restored in 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. How much of it is original? Well, according to fragments that were found the duke should wear an armour, so the padding could be completely Viollet's invention.
But I'm sure I've seen other examples.
