The targets were around 3.5" to 4.25" thick. I tried 3 kinds of downward diagonal cuts with some of the cuts didn't even fully reach the targets.

I named it "Turbo cut". In the past I would have difficulty, ie. feeling high resistance, in dealing with rolls bigger than 4.5" in diameter with diagnonal cut. My horizontal cut record was 6" but diagonal cut, even with right handed, was only 4.5" barely. This time, I applied the newly learned method on my left hand and tried out a 4.6" roll. It went through so smooth!!!

One thing I noticed here is that you are very close to your target, so close that if it was an opponent I would expect to see grappling involved at some point. Is there a reason for that? I see you don't do it for all your cutting videos, and not when sparring. I would have thought it would be easier to cut further away and stepping in arms outstretched (at the end of the blow, I.E. Long Point or Langenort).

There are different scenarios and different applications. For the very closed one where my hand was touching the targets, it was used when my opponent is closing in or thrusting at me. I practiced these close-cuts more often because from my European longsword background, I'm already familiar with cutting at extended range. So I have to get myself proficient with the closer-range cut of Chinese martial arts that involve different body mechanics.
