Hi everyone,
Oakeshott mentions etched incriptions on two swords of the late 13th century. Could anybody point me to an according publication or depictions?
Thanks,
Roland
Hi Roland
Which text are you consulting? I can probably give you some more info but there are multiple pieces that he might be referencing.

Hi Craig,
nice to hear from you, hope you are well.
I am refering to p 116 in Records of the Medieval Sword where he describes a type XIV sword currently held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The blade shows a faded out inscription of negative letters on a dark background in the fuller. Oakeshott writes that this is an etched inscription akin to the sword in Toledo Cathedral of Sancho IV el Bravo of Castille (died 1298).
I am considering to get such an inscription on a custom-made type XVI sword.
Any help with the research would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Roland
