While visiting him this past weekend, my friend showed me the video of “sabering a champagne bottle”, and requested that we try it during the American Super Bowl.
I knew that my friend had a replica scramaseax and I requested that we use the seax for the “test cutting”. The photo did not turn out great, but the certificate identifies the seax as having been patterned off of an approximately 9th century one found in the Thames river. Made by Eric McHugh of Albion approximately 2004 or 2005, this replica seax was donated to an Episcopal church in Madison to auction off during a fund raiser. (Obviously my friend was the lucky bidder.)
Although we did not get a perfect perpendicular fracture of the neck, we proved that a scramaseax can still be considered a functional household tool.
