Hello all.
I've recently been given a sword. With all the research ive done so far, its exactly the same as this
http://www.antiquefirearms.com/pages/807.htm
It has some markings.
On the Hilt
H.A.M.32.7
On the scabbard
M.F.29.42
H.A.M.3.7
Can anyone shine some light
Thank you
I'm not familiar with the markings but this design of sabre was used by several countries. I know for certain that a similar weapon was used by the Prussians (and later Germany), the British and the US. IIRC the 1811 Prussian Cavalry Sabre was a licensed copy of the famous British 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre. I also seem to remember that Britain supplied Prussia with them at one time too. The Germans continued to use the same sabre until WWI so it could have been manufactured at any time throughout the 19th and early 20th Century. US heavy cavalry also used a US made copy of the same sword. I think the US version had a leather covered scabbard and I have a feeling the markings would probably have US stamped somewhere too. So I would lean to either British or German I think.
I know its not much but hope this helps. :)
