I thought it was about time I gave my AT 1563 a new look, more like a face lift.

I ground the blade to give her a sharp apple seed edge and get rid of all machine marks. This gave her a uniform satin finish.

The handle is leather over chord and wood and strapped overall with brass wire. The bands over the handle and the crown over the pommel are gold leafed reticulated brass and protected with a very durable special varnish. The decorative lines on the cross guard are also filled with gold leaf. Overall, the hilt has taken a very rich and sumptuous look.

The new specs are as follows:

Total length - 51 3/8 inches
Blade length - 38 1/8
Handle length - 9 1/2
Thickness at base - 0.240
Width at base - 1.710
COG - 3 1/4
COP - 23 3/4 approx.
Blade steel - 5160
Weight - 3 lb 4.7 ounces

I think it is not too much and it keeps well in tune with austureity (is that a word?) with rest of the sword. Well done.

That is very nice. Great work! I have an older 1563 and I can testify that what you have done is a grand upgrade. I hardly recognized it for what it started out as. Bravo! :cool:

I don't normally join those that gush over custom work, but that's truly lovely. I like your use of gold leaf. It's a little excessive on the pommel, in my opinion, but very well done.

Hi Adam, your point is very well taken and your remark about the pommel decoration is very observant.

This started with the triangular side pieces to go in first, which created an aesthetic imbalance, hence the top rectangular pieces to create a balance and satisfy the eye. The ring around the base of the bolt was just a logical addition to complete the whole thing.

Had I started with the top rectangular pieces with the ring in between, the decoration would have been self sufficient and the eye would have been very much satisfied. I'm sure you see my point.

The gold leaf may be a little bright at the moment, but given some time it will mellow down and blend with the rest of the hilt.

To answer your question M. I have no plans for a scabbard at the moment.

Well I received Gabriel G.'s upgraded AT1563. The pictures do it little justice!

Mr. Ghazarian, I'll definitely keep your contact information close the next time I think about purchasing a sword ... upgraded or not. ;)

Now it's time to work with CF on designing a complimentary scabbard for those opportunities I might get to actually wear this blade. :D
