A couple months ago I posted here lamenting that there wasn't a good reproduction of the Thames mace. Craig Johnson of Arms & Armor replied that they used to make a cast one that they supplied to another company. I e-mailed him asking if A & A would consider making one for me. Craig said that he didn't know if they still had the molds, and I didn't expect to hear any more on the matter.

I was surprised to hear from him a couple weeks later that he had found an already cast head that had never been finished and he would make a mace for me.

It was delivered yesterday, and more than met my expectations. This one has six flanges like the original instead of eight as the Windlass version has. The fit and finish of the head and shaft couldn't be better in my opinion. It looks like what I think a perdiod weapon would have appeared when new. There are even marks at the base of the flanges that make them look as if they were seperate parts instead of being cast as a whole.

I couldn't be happier with the job A & A did. It ends my search for a copy of the Thames mace that began about ten years ago. Thanks to Craig and the whole crew for a job well done.

FWIW I'm still looking for extant mace weights - especially ones with intact handles.

I tried to weigh it the other day after reading the thread on mace weights. All I have at home is a bathroom scale and it didn't really register. I guess I need a more sensitive scale. I'll try to find a suitable scale at work. For now, I have to say it feels fairly heavy in my hand, certainly more than two pounds.

You can get a digital kitchen scale at most placed for $10-$15, it is what I use for reviews.

I weighed the mace this morning on a digital scale. It is 2.48 lbs. including the haft. That's a good bit less than I would have guessed.

You can also get a digital "fishing" scale at Harbor freight that works nicely for very little money.
