The power of impact weapons
I ran across this photo and thought folks might like to see the devastating power impact weapons can impart. This is a closed burgonet from the Landzeughaus, Graz.

I suppose the holes could be bullet holes, but they're awfully square for a projectile...

Re: The power of impact weapons
Looks to be of a war hammer or some other blunt weapon.

It could be any type of weapon with a spike (war hammer, halberd, pollaxe, etc.). Judging by the different sizes and shapes of the holes, this poor guy may have gotten it from more than one weapon.
Ouch!
Looks like an object with multiple spikes might have done that (a four pointed lucern hammer maybe).
I love the hammer finish on the visor, but I'm glad I wasn't wearing it that day!...
Looks to me like it's been used to test weapons. like war hammers or something.
Don't think if it was being worn at the time, that the wearer would have allowed so many hits all in one spot!
(Unless the Big hole was the first wack!........but then, if this was the case, there would be no need for the lighter hits....)
Looks like a blow from the hammer side of a poleaxe. Some of those look like giant metal meat tenderizers. Ruin your day for sure.
Perhaps somebody practised with crossbow...

They could be from bodkin arrows. They make nice square holes like that.

The number of hits in the same area suggests to me that it was a test piece. Either that or someone with a bec de corbin was VERY angry and got a little carried away?
To me it appears as if some of the blows penetrated the helmet's skull only shallowly, possibly not enough to kill the guy inside, until the blow that made the big hole struck him...
I have quite a few other pictures from Graz showing impact holes/dents...

I'll post them when I get off work today.
Took a bit, but as requested:

I know I have several more, this is the only one I could find right at the moment.

More than likely, this weapon or something similar. The dent is from the mace side and the holes from the spear side, that square shape is the same size and shape as the spear point of the poelarm.

I wonder if this is not the result of blows with a long hafted spiked club or possibly a large spiked flail?
Something like the ones seen in this wood cut:
