My new sword-the one that made me start collecting after reading the Sharpe-books-the english M1796Heavy Cavalry trooper sword.
Been looking for a good one for years-thanks to Jonathan Hopkins i found this one on Pat Donnellys homepage.It´s still en route-i hope to get it next week.
The pics are from Pat Donnelly-he allowed to use them in the forum-his side is allways worth a visit-great items and a pleasure to deal with.

The blade officially re-pointed blades from hatched to spearpoint(like Sharpes ).
The Blade is marked with official proof marks and the maker's name "HADLEY" , the langets are officially removed.
The scabbard hilt with regimental and troop markings "Q / DG / D / 35 for Queens Dragoon Guards, Troop D, weapon 35.

Congratulations on the addition. It looks like a very fine old sword. This is a dealer with some interesting listings and I know Jonathan (as I think many of us do) likes to see forumites find swords right for them and keep them circulating in an extended family. So many listings simply vanish. I always hope they have gone to good homes and may surface on the boards but there are many we just don't get to hear about.

I am glad it worked out or you and that (so far) you are happy with your purchase. This pattern is getting hard to find at any price, so I think you did well. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the sword when it finally arrives. I bought mine because of Sharpe as well!

Thank you again for showing me the hp-i´m really looking forward. According usps-tracking i should get it the next days.
As soon its here i´ll post some pics of the sword beside the french counterparts-i´m looking forward to compare the handling og both models.
It´s years since i last handled a M1796HC-then i had neither the money to purchase nor an original french at hand to feel the difference.

Thank you-i feel the same-its allways sad to see a nice sword and not to know where it goes..

I've always kinda liked that model. The hilt design looks sensible and doesn't appear to have that "protect only the right side of the hand" issue that unfortunately tends to put me off most military sabers and similar swords.

I finally received my new sword-and i´m very happy with it.
It has a great patina-one sees the age and sees that it has seen more then one battle.
I took some pics this we matching the sword with its french counterparts-i don´t yet have a french trooper HC sword, so only officers version with the wunderful sabre à bataille hilt-i really love the look.
Like expected the M1796 is heavy (~1kg for saber and scabbard each) and feels bladeheavy, the french standartversion (doublefullered, plain blade) is heavier (1,2kg) but handles much better.
Compared to the luxury sabre à bataille there is a world of difference-it weights only 800gr and feels very agile-a dream of a blade.
Lat pic shows the HC besides a M1796LC officers version-very light, very agile-comes close to the french, but more bladeheavy-clearly a blade for slashing.
