-What's the maximum length of a cutlass? (That is, when does it stop being a cutlass and start being a saber or backsword?)

The official length of the British 1804 was 29" blade but they can vary by up to an inch.
Mine is 28 and a third inches

So, the average blade lenght would be, what, somwhere around 27 inches? Sound about right?

Would you want to defend / storm a lower gun deck with a longer sword? I wouldn't.

:D Cutlasses have to be short enough to use in confined spaces but long enough to be ofd use to a landing party Anders, they very seldom are longer than 28-29 ".

Thank you, but I am well aware of the intended use of the cutlass. I'm not, however, looking for the most effective lenght, but rather the maximum lenght. I'm simply wondering if 30 inches is the longest a cutlass can have for a blade or if they can be longer then that.

I wouldn't storm a lower gun deck at all. I would point carronades at the hatches and toss grenados down until they gave up. Once you control the upper deck, you control the ship.
Right, this is an English privateers' cutlass dating from 1840.
Blade length: 27 1/2 inches.
