Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find evidence of Kettle Hats being used in North West Europe during Viking Age ( approx 793ce-1066ce )? My Trivia only memory links the terms War Hat and Saga but I would rather have a better evidence then my poor memory.
Thanks in advance.

nope. only "viking helm" found is a spagenhelm. Carolianians weren't know as "vikings" per say. their helmets are seen in paintings etc but i don't know of any fragments found. i believe kettlehats start showing up in western europe in the 12th cent if i'm not mistaken.
Hi
I have done some more research and found the following quote in the Laxdæla saga.
The translation seems to describe a kettle hat, although I am left wondering if it is a 13th c injection describing "Modern" 13th c Armour in the much older saga.

He wore a plated mail-coat and a steel helmet with a brim as wide as the width of your hand. He held a gleaming axe over his shoulder, the blade of which was an ell in length. The man was dark, with black eyes and the appearance of a viking. |
