Hello! I read this old topic about early greatswords http://www.myArmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=8309&highlight and as my ordered Del Tin 5143 isn't sent yet I decided for the change of fittings so that the sword would look like an early example of a greatsword. Fulvio agreed and I just have to decide which pommel and crossguard I want. Would fittings of Del Tin 2133 (st. Maurice, Vienna) be apropriate for such a sword (let's say year 1100-1150)? Original 5143 pommel and 2147 spike hilt is also an option. Or maybe pommel and cross of some other Del Tins would fit better? And btw, would you classify DT 5143 as an Oakeshott XIIa or XIIIa? I can choose practicaly any Del Tin guard or pommel. Please, help.

I think the 2133 fittings would be okay visually. Using the 2131's might work, too.
Of course, the handling of the sword could be severely impacted by using fittings not designed for the blade.
The 5143 isn't a typical XIIa or XIIIa with its narrow fuller. The profile taper probably makes it more XIIa-ish than XIIIa-ish though.
Sorry for the impatience, but the sword is part of a deal with a local store and they won't wait for me to decide very long...
And what with the original 5143 pommel? Is it okay for 12th century? Changing just the guard shouldn't influence the sword's balance much... 2147 is hand and a half sword and its guard would maybe fit better in the 5143's balance then st. Maurice, which is single hander?

The pommel might be a stretch for that era, though it may be theoretically possible. The pommel has more to do with balance than the guard, but both factor into handling/mass distribution.
I ordered the sword with st. Maurice 2133 brazil nut pommel and 2147 spiked hilt. I hope it won't be too blade heavy because of a pommel lighter then the original. But it will definitely be the style I was looking for... I'll put some pictures when it arrives...
To my liking the 5143 is already a tad blade heavy and sluggish. But I am more into slender hand and a half swords lik XVa and XVIa.
