I can't find plastic model armour kits anywhere and I'm wondering if this modeling niche has simply been overlooked. With a good reproduction full-plate harness costing more than $20,000, this hobby just cries out for well-researched plastic scale models of important harness styles. I'd happily pay $50 for a high-quality kit which, when finished, would stand 8 or 9 inches tall, including a museum-style box stand.

The kit could include:
• a featureless black mannequin onto which the armour pieces would be glued.
• historical notes on that given type of armour
• properly labled armour diagram/assembly instructions
• A box stand

These kinds of highly-accurate kits are available for just about every technological hobby interest--sci-fi, military, automotive, aviation, fantasy, etc. So, why not armour? I'd love to have a few accurate harness models on my bookshelves.

Is there anybody out there doing this kind of thing or am I just going to have to break out my Sculpey?

I'd settle for detailed helmet models. I've seen these for WWII-era U.S. and German helmets and they look great.

Yeah, that's a different idea. Interesting, for sure, but lacking the detail of a good plastic model.

Depending on your artisic abilities and expendable income, companies like Seil Model or Pegaso Models sell some pretty gorgeous sculpts. If you have even more expendable income, but no talent, you can pay a painting service to paint for you.

This is an example from Pegaso, they cover a very broad range of historical interests.

I seem to remember that when I was a kid ( many many decades ago ) there were some model kits featuring armour: I think I actually bought one at the time featuring a frog mouth jousting helm. This would have been made by one of the major model kit makers of the time like Aurora, Revell, Airfix ???

Lots of exploring of this site should be productive and somewhat " time consuming ", but fun.

I wouldn't be suprised if 70% or more of this site's patrons have at least dabbled in areas like this. Myself I've painted and sold hundreds of the 28mm variety, but these larger historical pieces keep catching my eye.

I'm not familiar with the plastic model type figures, but quite a few of the pewter models are right out of Osprey books.
