Depend on your definition of functional.
Using sturdy leather that hardens when drying sewing the wet leather around the blade is as simple as it gets.
Again using the blade as a direct mold you can slightly less simple build GRP aound it and then glue thin leather around that.
Have fun.

Peter,
There is a button like this [ Linked Image ] for people that want to receive email. Try it. :)
I have made sword sheaths from softened leather and formed around the sword. Grease the blade well and let dry.
I dyed and l laquard mine well and they have served me well over many SCA/RenFair events for many years.

Leather-covered wood seems to be the most common for the medieval era. Scabbards have been covered in a lot of depth here. Check these threads out:

And there are likely a bunch more.

I'd think you could if historical accuracy was not a concern for you. A more historical option would be velvet. :)
Are there any plans for a wood and nylon sheath o this website?....~peter~
Peter, I believe any plans found here will be more historically based (i.e. no nylon). You can reference the above posted links, or try a search of your own.
Your best bet, if you are set upon using modern materials like nylon, is to just substitute the nylon for the leather in any of the links already posted for you.

I would imagine you could.
