The folks at MRL have been busy. They've introduced a Pembridge-style great helm:

and a bascinet with aventail:

I wonder if they're made to be worn together.
If you look closely in the right eyeslit of the great helm (viewer's right!), you can see the curved edge of the bascinet. So, it's gotta be under there in that picture! I wonder if they include the padded cloth donut thingy for between the two. It would be prudent of them to have made the pembridge in 16 guage, but that's probably not the case...
On one hand it will be neat to see the next catalog.

Good eyes! :) I hadn't noticed that. That intrigues me.
I wish the aventail for the bascinet wasn't made of butted mail. :(

Ummmmm, good point. Of course, you could just order up a few thousand 8mm rings from GDFB and make a riveted aventail............ :eek: :lol:
Have to say though, that other than the butted aventail, I do like the set.

I like the shape of the Pembridge helm. Having worn a similar helm in mock-combat I have absolutely no desire to acquire another one as a 'user'. On the other hand, it would make a very nice display piece, maybe with a little salt and vinegar to age it up a bit?

I think so too, but you'd have to scrub all that darn lacquer off.... That doesn't sound appealing to me. :)
It looks like a fairly decent helm.
The last 3-4 Windlass made pieces I've received haven't had any lacquer on them. Maybe they've discontinued the practice.

As of a couple of months ago when I emailed them about a different helm, they said they coat everything. Who knows? My old MRL helm was unlacquered (and rusty). They seem to go through lacquering phases, as well as horrid nickel-plating phases.
Does anyone have any further opinions on either of these helms? Has anybody purchased either of them? I'd like to order a good quality visored bascinet, but all the armorers that I spoke with have a substantial waiting list. I was thinking about ordering the Great Helm, and building a crest for it to hold me over until I can get something better. Any thoughts on this idea? I would be using it for living history, so I wouldn't want to waste the money if it isn't of reasonable accuracy.

I haven't seen one in person, but from the photos it actually looks like a decently done (or better) helm. Putting a crest on it would be fantastic. If I had the money, time, or skills, I'd get one and build a crest for it.
You may want to check on what kind of suspension there is in the great helm if you don't also get the bascinet.
The fact that MRL states that the Bascinet has an adjustable liner, but no liner is mentioned for the Great Helm, I would imagine that the Great Helm comes unlined. For anyone with experience with MRL helms in general, what are the liners (if present) like. How functional and adjustable are they?
I ordered one of thier sallets years ago but sent it back because of the liner. It was a cheesy suspension type made with a not very good quality leather and broke when I tried to adjust it. It was not a properly padded liner. Who knows, maybe they have improved over the years. Didn't care for the shape of the helmet bowl either.

My old greta helm has no liner or suspension, but I hear that they do now.

Here is the original Pembridge helm. Of course, we don't know if MRL based it solely on the Pembridge helm or if it was another similar helm. For its price, I don't think it's too far off.
