Fullers on Lutel swords
Hi all

I am thinking of buying one of Lutels viking swords, as seen here: http://lutel.cz/obrazky/12014_12015_12016.jpg

Now, what I am wondering about is the fullers on these swords. They seem awfully narrow for viking type swords. In my experience, you usually see these kind of swords with very wide fullers.

Now, can anyone comment as to the historical validity of the fullers on these swords? Any help is appreciated!

Lutel uses pretty much a standard width on their fullers, and in general, those are too narrow for Viking swords.
It's a pity they don't show the full swords on their website. The pictures provided look like the blades had parallel edges.
Anyway, although there were a few viking swords with narrow fullers, these were afaik typically of a later date than stated here - more like 1100 - and hilted with more or less a "Gaddhjalt" variety.

So with parallel or almost parallel edges, short lower guard and triangular or cloud pommel, I think the fuller should be a lot wider. Besides, the weight stated is a bit high compared to historical examples.
However, these swords cost only about 270 Euros / USD 330 including a scabbard, so I think they are actually an okay deal for the price.
Email them and tell them you want a wider fuller if you like the sword otherwise.

They might be able to do it.

Hey, thanks, I did not think of that at all! Anyway, the cost of the swords is the main reason I am looking at them. THough I got some extra cash yesterday...maybe I will just get Russel Thomas make the fittings and a scabbard for a Binns blade.
