Hello everyone, I'm a history student who is wanting to get into reenacting. Though I've managed to find enough information on or have found sites where I can get the info on weaponry and armor from the period I'm interested in the 13th - 15th century I've found next to nothing on the clothes. I'm trying to find out what the common foot soldier/ mercenary wore during this time period and if breeches or some other sort of type of heavier pants would be accurate to the period. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.
Try www.sirclisto.com for a pant load of info. on just about everything from weapons to clothing to history to...etc,etc.......

Generally speaking, they didn't wear pants. They wore hose ("hosen").
I think Bjorn Hellqvist has an example that proves the exeption to the rule, IIRC.
The best thing to do is get in touch with an existing group. They will likely already have done the research.
There is a fair amount of info on the web if you go poking about, however, and some reenactment forums. Most libraries generally carry something on Medieval costume as well.
Here's a couple of sites to get you started:

You will need to narrow it down quite a bit more than a 200 year period. Very generally, in the 14th century split hosen (basically really long socks you hold up with points or strings tied to your underwear) were worn. By the early to mid 15th century, joined hose were common. For a nice set of pictures (and for a price, the clothes themselves) see
