HI All,

I was commissioned to make a scabbard for an Albion Knecht and here is the result.

I based it on the woodcut below, taken from another thread here about scabbards suitable for the Knecht.

The core is poplar, and in this case is fabric covered and then leather covered. The riser is formed out of wood and makes a nice positive stop.

What is notable is the difference is suspension from most other scabbards in that it is on a single belt that passes through a woven section of leather strapping. This style of suspension is very German early 16thC.

Great work as ever!

With this single belt suspension, does the sword tend to hang almost vertical as with other single-point designs, or does the lacing mean that it rides more horizontal, as in the woodcut?

The belt enters at the top end and exits at the bottom, so that it hangs at around 20 degrees (estimate).

Folks, if you're in need of a scabbard, I can't recommend Tod highly enough. I now have a few swords with scabbards from him, and a few more lined up which I'll be commissioning in the coming years.

Tod's quality is of the highest, turnaround times surprisingly fast, and prices very reasonable ... the holy grail of high-level custom artisans.

It's great to see an excellent maker taking on such things!

As regards where to see this style of knot, it was very common in the Landsknecht artwork.

yes Tod, I saw many similar landsknechts knots on scabbards - but your is little different :)
anyway - I like this style - good work.

I am not sure how mine is particularly different. The straps are thinner in my example than the woodcut, so they have used less passes, but aren't they fundamentally the same?

Not so much the 'puffed,' but you certainly capture the 'slashed' flavor of the Landsknecht nicely!

Seriously though, fantastic scabbard. Love the clean, well made but still fairly utilitarian feel. It looks like it makes carrying the Knecht (a surprisingly large weapon) actually rather practical.

Top notch, as always!
