Getting my Munich in a few days, wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to do with the pommel recess?

I was thinking of possibly trying to find someone to set a semi precious gem in it, no idea who to look for for that

Anyone else seen anything cool or have opinions ?

According to the Review by Bill Grandy here at myArmoury, the pommel recess is .250 inches deep and .875 inches (22.2 mm) diameter, about the size of a US nickel You could get a fair -sized coin or medallion in there. One place to look is Antiquanova I put one of their reproductions in my latest sword - see below.

I have put either coins or gems into my personal swords with pommel recesses. On eBay, you can get stones in a variety of sizes and color for really cheap. I have also gotten actual historical coins there as well. When you set them, I have found that clear epoxy works best, but have also gotten excellent results fixing metal coins with JB Weld putty. I've not lost a coin or stone yet using this method, even with heavy use.

Be sure to show us what you end up deciding on.

Looking on the Antiquanova website, I would go with the copper Templar Denarius. That would contrast nicely with the steel pommel. But, that's just me.... :D ..........McM

Of course they offer it in gold too, but the plated brass is quite reasonable. At 22mm it's the right size.

Ewart Oakeshott wrote an article in the 1993 Park Lane Arms Fair Catalogue called The Sword of the Comte' de Dreux: Non-Christian Symbolism and the European Sword. There are some interesting things in the pommel of this sword, made around 1240. In one recess there is an enamelled disk showing a shield, presumably the Dreux coat of arms. In the other recess there is a mysterious translucent object. Oakeshott says first that it may be stone, rock crystal, or chalcedony. Then he opines that it is a piece of polished oak root from a tree sacred to the Comtes.

..........I've never seen an exact precedent for it, but it does do a lot for the sword visually.

I prefer coins or enameled plaques over stones. There's a large precedent for stones, but to my eye they usually look cheap. I do need to find something to fill the recesses on my Svantes pommel.
