Just received an Email from the manufacturers saying they based the pavise design on illustrations in a book by Charles Kightly entitled 'Flodden. The Anglo-Scottish War of 1513. published by Almark Publishing Co. Ltd in 1975 - Now all I need to do is track down the books sources !! Anybody have a copy and can shed ligt on Mr Kightly's sources ??

Yeah, its like an Osprey Book, nice pictures little substance. No footnotes, no bibliography. A single page list of sources.
The illustration by Robert Nicholls is on pg 23. Looks more like a Roman scutem than anything else.

Bounamici pavise.
Hi all.

Thought you might like to see a pic of my pavise, which is loosely based on an original pavise pictured. The original, as far as I have been able to ascertain bears the coat of arms of a famous medieval Florentine family - the Bounamici. The latin inscription bordering my pavise translates as "Praise this most holy abbot, venerate this most holy abbot", this is a hopefully suitable alternative inscription, as the border inscription on the original is very damaged. It hints at praising an important religious, medieval city benefactor, so looks right to me :)

Here is another austrian pavise, similar to the one already listed:

By the way, does anyone have some other pictures of pavises? ;)

I found this image over on the armour archive forums. Freydal (part of the files name) was Maximilian's book on tournaments if I'm not mistaken; which I'm guessing is where the image was taken from. The deep rounded gutters look very similar to one of the hand pavises in the woodcut from Maximilian's triumphal procession.

For a few months now I've been thinking about building one of these hand pavises with the deep, rounded gutter. Though everything I've read on here says that pavises are made with a wooden core, I'm wondering if that is really practical with this particular design - the part I see wood having a problem with is where the edges of the gutter fit to the edges of the flat sides. would the edges of the plank sides and the outer edge of the gutter just be mitered so the three parts (gutter, with a plank on each side) fit together? this seems like it would work, but that the joint would not be flexible enough to take much shock (and the freydal image shows them going at each other with hammers).

An old friend and longtime mentor on things such as this gave me the idea to use water hardened leather for the gutter. I've worked out a design on paper that has the gutter being made in two layers layers of soaked leather glued together and nailed over a wooden form to dry and harden. the design I've been thinking about should have a little more flex than solid wood. the sides would still be wood, and the outsides faced with linen (or maybe thin rawhide), gesso, paint, and maybe silver leaf/guilding...

What I'm wondering is if anyone else thinks a gutter of hardened leather may be a reasonable substituted for a solid wooden gutter on this particular design? I see more advantages for using leather in this case, and quite a few reasons to not use wood. Have many pavises actually been taken apart, or somehow been tested to determine the materials not visible on the surface?
To resurrect this wonderful thread, I have collected some 15th century artwork from Central European territory (mostly Austria, Italy and South Germany). Images were collected from Austrian Imareal archive of medieval art.

I just hope this webservice for hosting files work, I've never used it before.

http://www.mytempdir.com/1329884

Paveze imareal.rar - it's a rar archive, which contains htm file (internet page) + associated directory with images. File length is 1.7 MB. To view the page with images, the file and associated directory must be in the same directory.

I'm planing to build a pavise, linden (lime) boards approx. 18 mm thick (slightly curved - I will achieve that by making it from 25 mm thick board), central board 25 mm thick, with beak on top, covered in linen canvas and gesso, then painted with oil colours. Size will be approx 125 cm x 60 cm. This is the general plan.

[ Linked Image ]

As you see, it will be quite a simple design - no chiselling of central gutter or any other advanced carpentry. I suppose not all pavises are made that simple, but several I have seen are just made of three planks.

Motive of the painting will be a bit different. I hope all will go according to plan, and I intend to post pictures of my progress. Any comment or recommendation?
Pavises from Central European art
This is the artwork from the file posted above, in same small resolution. I have collected some 15th century artwork from Central European territory (mostly Austria, Italy and South Germany). Images were collected from Austrian Imareal archive of medieval art.

Not all the large shields listed are pavises, and some are small hand pavises. Some images are very interesting, lots of detail I have never seen before.

Interesting pavise, site has very large images of the back side!!!!!

AN EXTREMELY RARE AUSTRIAN PAVISE, KLAUSEN, circa 1480

Of rectangular shape with rounded corners and a medial gutter of angular section narrowing to a projecting ‘beak’ at the top; and formed of wood covered with gessoed canvas; the front painted with the Bindenschild or arms of Austria beneath an archducal crown, and elsewhere with delicate scrolls coloured grey on a red ground on its right side, and white and grey respectively on a half black and half white ground on its left side, all within a border of undulating yellow and green branches and leaves on a red ground outlined with a narrow white band; and the rear fitted with the remains of a carrying handle and straps.

Pavises of this type were carried by crossbowmen to provide them with temporary shelter while they spanned and loaded.

Some pavises from Slovenia. I know it's not much, and the preservation of some of the frescoes is pretty bad, but hey, we're small country. There could be more, I don't have full catalogue of Slovenian frescoes and other medieval artwork (simply because there isn't one).

Was there any difference between the pavise carried by the medieval gonner and the crossbowman? If so, what would the gonne pavise look like?

Hi I am new to these forums. I belong to a 15th C living history group and am very interested in constructing my own pavise. I should be very grateful, therefore, for any advice or references on pavise construction - in particular the way the actual wood was fitted together.

many thanks

Ravensburg became a Free Town in 1267 and joined the Swabian League in 1331.

A similar example is in the Wallace Collection, London (No. 338) and another is in the Kretzschmar von Keinbusch Collection in Philadelphia (No. 284).
