As some of you might know, I bought myself an Albion Soldat grosse messer during their 25% off sale they had awhile back.
I thought maybe I'd hold onto it for a bit and then sell it. The big sale would allow me to at least recoup my money. Once it arrived, I liked it so much, I decided I had to keep it. It's an absolutely fantastic piece and of a type that I've wanted for many years. Keeper all the way.
After selling a few things to justify the expense, I made up my mind that I wanted to have a scabbard made for it. It'll be a little while before I'm able to get that done, but in the meantime, I wanted to have a by-knife and pricker made that would fit in the messer's scabbard.
I commissioned the by-knife and pricker from Tod's Stuff. I only asked for the grips to made from walnut to be similar to the Soldat and for there to be integrated bolsters. Tod was quick to make them and once they arrived, I realized that even the smallest projects with him produce great results.
Shortly before he completed the by-knife and pricker, he posted some items for sale that he already had in stock. One of these was a bauernwehr / hauswehr. Being a fan of these types of knives, I snatched it up and asked Tod if he could stain the wood a bit darker to better fit with the Soldat kit I was putting together. He did one better and replaced the grip scales with the same walnut he used for the by-knife and pricker. The walnut scale grip construction, nagel, and single-edged blade are very reminiscent of the Soldat.
The result? It's now a set of knives that are very complimentary to each other. I have a scabbard already for the bauernwehr (not shown in the photos) and will be getting one made in the future for the Soldat and by-knife/pricker set. Together, these things are going to great! The idea will be not to have anything match, because that would look silly, but instead fit together in a cohesive way. I think it's well on its way to that goal already.
Shown here are the blades. Once everything is completed, I'll show the set again and will add everything to my Collection Gallery with full measurements and whatnot.
Thanks for looking.

That's a nice-looking set. :) They go together well without looking like you tried to have them go together (if that makes sense). :)
Truly magnificent. I'm interested in seeing the scabbards as well.
Very nice stuff, NR ... It'll be interesting to see the scabbard done for your Soldat, as well
as how you fit the knives into things. Have you anyone in mind ???

I'm seeing green! The soldat is one of my favorite Albion pieces (probably in 3rd place), and I've only seen two or three people actually show theirs off.
If you get a chance, certainly do a review for those four items, particularly the larger two knives (messer and hauswehr).

Glorious!
They look really medieval together !
PS. So Soldat's grip is available in different colours too? Yours is brown, on Albion site it's black, and there is no info about colours.

This is the basic design for the scabbard.

I wasn't given an option for grip colors. I believe it's always walnut. I suspect that the Albion photos are just very dark and don't give any shadow detail to see the walnut accurately. The grip slabs on mine have a lot of grain activity and contrast, however, compared to the ones on the Albion site. It was a pleasant surprise.
I like the look of "black", too, and would wonder what period-appropriate wood would give that effect.
It definitelly looks like a nice set you got there, can't wait to see how the scabbard will look like when done.
Holy mother of...!! O_O I have to get me one of those!!! Truly magnificent!

Are you going to do a review on all 4 items?
If so any idea when it will be posted?

I'm sorry, but I don't write reviews. I haven't for years.

So... when are you going to let someone else borrow it so they can write a review? ;)
Cool stuff Nathan. I have to say that when you get swords. knives, etc. you do it right! The "suite" that you will have created once you have the scabbard will be very, very nice. Looking forward to the pics!
That's lovely so far...going to be neat to see the finished whole.
That will be quite the ensemble when it's done. There's a lot of interesting variation in the pieces themselves but they fit together in a nice complementary way, there's a lot of interesting shapes and proportions going on there as well. It all reminds me of how much I'd like to add a messer to my collection.
Very cool.

Oh, what a collection! That Bauernwehr! The Messer! The by-knives! Couldn't get much better.
As for black scales--horn, maybe?

Oooooohhhhh!!! Super nice!!! Can't wait to see the finished project. Dammit, this is exactly what I want to have done. Frakkin' economy! Congratulations on what will be an awesome set, Nathan!

You need a "black" sallet, too.
Those are really incredible together, I am seriously, seriously jealous. Congratulations.
