You're right, I mispoke. Mine also didn't have the polished steel elements, so I took some silver paint and dry brushed it on. The results came out quite nice. (Mine's also a custom pierced blade)

Bill, The pierced blade is an interesting feature, which I don't recall seeing before. Was that commonly done?

Handling - I am no fencer either, but i too liked the handling when i tried a (blunt) out.

I'm not sure quite how common it was, but there's definately several historical examples. The majority I've seen are on daggers, but some rapiers exist, such as these from the photo albums:

Yeah, pierced blades are common on Renaissance-era weapons. It's a feature I particularly love.
