The Highland Claymore (or more accurately
Claidheamh Da Laihm) is a uniquely Scottish weapon that reached its hey-day in the 16th Century. The quatrefoils at the end of the cross and the langet down the center of the blade are particularly distinctive. The wheel pommel (
Oakeshott Type J) and cross are blued. The cylindrical grip is covered in black leather.
The
Claidheamh Da Laihm is a big, beefy blade. This sword is meant to be used exclusively with two hands. It is of a flattened diamond section with a spatulate tip, making it a dedicated cutter. In the world of swords, this would certainly be considered to be the equivalent of a .44 magnum.
