Scotia Metalwork Sgian Dubh
Original: Scotland, early 19th century
This knife is a typical example of a
sgian dubh. The handle is made of crown Sambar stag. The differentially heat-treated blade of 1095 steel is held into the grip by epoxy and a brass band. The natural curvature of the stag fits very comfortable in the hand. The blade bears McRae's stamp and has traditional file-work on the spine.
The sgian dubh fits into a leather sheath that overlaps the lower portion of the grip. This would keep it well-protected when worn in the top of the stocking in the traditional manner.
Inspired by many similar knives seen in historic portraits.
