This book is featured on Chad Arnow's list: 2,500 Years of European Helmets: 800 B.C.-1700 A.D by Howard M. Curtis ![]()
* RECOMMENDED * This is a fantastic pictorial reference for helmets, probably one of the top two out there. 150-160 helmets are pictured accompanied by 1-3 paragraphs of description for each. Some of the helms are ones frequently published elsewhere. A good number are ones I haven't run across or rarely have run across. It has a large number of many types of helms. For example, there are *13* 14th century great helms pictured, more than any other single publication I've seen. The pictures themselves range from okay in quality to very good, with some interesting angles not normally seen. The text is okay, but not epic.
This book has two downsides: it is rare and it can be expensive (circa $300 in some cases). However, it is a gem in this field covering museum examples and examples from private collections, including the author's collection. Updated Apr 27, 2007 :: 4 of 4 members found this review helpful |
